National Running Day

Today is National Running Day! For those of you who don’t run, JUNE is probably one of the last months you would have guessed for this high energy holiday! Well, as HOT as it, it’s true! From coast to coast runners will be declaring their passion for running! Now I know not everyone is a runner, but it’s more than likely that you know someone that is. These are some great safety tips to keep in mind and pass along to your friends and family!
– Can you hear? I know it’s an absolute cRaZy notion to think of running without our favorite tunes plugged into our ears! BUT, cutting off your sense of hearing means you can’t hear oncoming cars, cyclists or other runners, unleashed dogs, or any other potential threat. If you do use headphones, run with the volume lowered and just one earbud in. – What are you wearing? Want to make a fashion statement? Think bright colors or white. No matter what time of day it is, it’s important that you are easily visible, especially to drivers! If you like to run near or after dusk and dawn, remember your reflectors. – Traffic, with or against?A big misconception is that you are to run with the flow of traffic…THINK AGAIN! That’s Cyclists, as a bicycle is considered a vehicle, not runners. Running against traffic makes it easier to see and be seen! This allows for reaction time for you and the oncoming car. – Are you aware?Always be alert as to the “who, what, when and where” of your surroundings! Being unaware makes you an easy target. Remember, the more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are. – Uneasy Feeling? Are you trying a new route? Avoid unpopulated areas and deserted roads. React on your intuition and avoid a person or situation if you’re unsure. If something tells you a situation is not “right”, it isn’t…TURN AROUND. – Who are you? Always have identification on you! Tuck your ID somewhere, wear an ID tag on your shoe, write your emergency info on a piece of tape and put it on you somewhere. In case of an emergency you want to make it as easy as possible to receive the help you need. These are just a few of the highlighted safety tips for running. Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially if you are a runner here in SW Florida! Happy National Running Day from Parvey & Cavenago.
